Luso Canadian SC: Winnipeg’s Football Home

Founded in 1973, the Luso Canadian Soccer Club has been one of the enduring institutions of the Portuguese community in Winnipeg. In a new LusoCanada Podcast episode, longtime member Manuel Felgueiras reflects on the club’s origins in the basement of the Caravela Bar, where Carlos Miranda and nine other founders created a team to represent Portugal and give Portuguese players another place to compete.

For more than five decades, Luso Canadian SC has remained faithful to a simple mission: football. While other organizations served important cultural, social, and folkloric roles within the Portuguese community in Manitoba, Luso was built specifically around the game. It gave generations of players a shirt to wear with pride, a place to gather, and a connection to their heritage through sport.

Felgueiras also recalls the difficult periods that tested the club’s survival: temporary homes, financial uncertainty, changing leadership, and seasons when the team itself faced challenges. Yet the organization endured because of the commitment of members and volunteers such as José Furtado, Martinho Medeiros, João Almeida, Fernando Sousa, and many others. Today, with a paid-off building and a stable foundation, Luso Canadian SC continues to serve Winnipeg’s football community.

The conversation is also a personal story. Manuel Felgueiras arrived in Winnipeg from the Minho region of Portugal in 1968 and has remained involved with Luso Canadian SC for more than fifty years.
