Banda do Sagrado Coração de Jesus de Toronto – History and Tradition
Banda do Sagrado Coração de Jesus de Toronto was founded in Toronto, at the Santa Cruz Parish, in 1974. Currently, it calls the Parish of Saint Helen home and its name is often confused with that of the church.
The band has a long-standing tradition of preserving a crucial heritage element of the home country, especially the Azores, where the filarmónica plays a very important role. This tradition is widespread across the Portuguese communities in Canada and, although Banda do Sagrado Coração de Jesus de Toronto is established in Toronto, it has graced events across the Province of Ontario and even outside the country.
LusoCanada recently held a conversation with the current conductor, Sandro Melo, who told us a bit about the history of the band, its composition and its most memorable performances. In this conversation, Melo also speaks of his own experience as a musician and how he was pushed into becoming the maestro at a time when the band needed help. He stepped up to the challenge and remained committed to this day.
Beyond practicing and playing at several events throughout the year, the band also offers music classes to aspiring musicians of all ages. Melo stressed that there is no age limit to start playing an instrument and illustrated this with the example of one of the musicians who began learning in his fifties and who is now a crucial element in the band.
