Casa das Beiras: Bernardino Nascimento’s Legacy
In the latest episode of the LusoCanada Podcast, we visit Casa das Beiras of Toronto for a conversation with Bernardino Nascimento, one of the organization’s founders and one of the community leaders most closely connected to its history.
The conversation traces the path from the early football club Os Viriatos, founded in 1977, to Clube Académico de Viseu of Toronto, created in 1989, and eventually to Casa das Beiras, which took shape in 2000 as a broader cultural home for the regions of Beira Alta, Beira Baixa, and Beira Litoral.
Bernardino reflects on the years of volunteer work, the creation of the Rancho Folclórico, the Semana Cultural Beirã, the purchase of the first community building near Caledonia and St. Clair, and the organization’s move to its current home on Ronald Avenue, in Toronto.
This episode is also a profile of Bernardino himself: an immigrant who arrived in Toronto in 1972, built a life through work, helped organize Portuguese football in the city, founded Beiras Driving School, and dedicated decades to community service.
Together, the episode, the history of Casa das Beiras, and Bernardino Nascimento’s profile help preserve an important chapter in the story of the Portuguese in Canada.
