Brief History
Audio Version:
Núcleo Sporting London is located right in the centre of the community, on Hamilton Road. It had the Club Portuguese of London as its cradle when, during a famous dinner, a group of about two dozen sportinguistas came together to launch the idea of representing Sporting Club de Portugal in London. It was the year of 1992.
The first meetings were held at the residence of Leonildo Carreira, member no. 1 and first ever president. Later, the headquarters moved to a warehouse owned by Alexandre Almeida, one of the pioneers and former president of the organization.
For almost a decade, the sportinguistas of London did not have headquarters of their own. However, it all changed in 2001 with the purchase of the current building that the association now calls home. The purchase was completed for $116,000. Members lent $1,000 each, 14 of which did so without charging interest.
Soccer has been part of the association since its foundation. It began with an old-timers squad that, in the meantime, ceased to exist. The lack of training facilities, coupled with the high cost associated with maintaining the sport, has prevented Sporting London from offering soccer as an activity to its associates.
The organization enjoys social gatherings through various events that it promotes but mainly by keeping its doors open daily to its members who gather here to socialize. Sporting of London has also created a hunter’s club that has been a tremendous success. The organization also promotes competitions with traditional and card games.
